Cupping Therapy

A time-honoured technique used to promote circulation, reduce muscular tension, and support the body’s natural healing response.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy involves the application of specially designed cups to the skin, creating gentle suction that draws tissue upward.

This suction promotes circulation in the targeted area and may help relieve muscle tension, stiffness, and stagnation.

At AcuEnhanced, we use glass, silicone, or plastic cups depending on the area and the individual. Cupping can be used as a stand-alone treatment or integrated with acupuncture or other modalities.

What Can It Support?

People seek Traditional Chinese Acupuncture for a wide range of concerns, including:

Muscular pain & tighness

Neck and back tension

Headaches

Sports recovery

Scars

Reduced circulation

Stress and stagnation

Localised discomfort or stiffness

How It Works

Cupping creates a vacuum-like suction that lifts the skin and superficial layers of muscle and fascia.

This gentle traction stimulates blood and lymph flow in the area, helps clear stagnation, and may assist the body’s natural detoxification process.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, cupping helps move Qi and blood, breaking up areas of stagnation that may contribute to pain or dysfunction.

What to Expect in a Session

Cupping is often performed during a regular acupuncture or bodywork session

After a short assessment, cups are placed on the skin using heat, suction pumps, or manual pressure

Cups may stay stationary or be moved over muscle tissue for massage-like effects (called “sliding cupping”)

Some people experience round marks afterward — these are not bruises and typically fade in a few days

Your comfort and consent are always prioritised

Common Questions

Will it leave marks?

Yes, cupping may leave circular marks (sometimes heart shaped if I use the heart cups) that range from light pink to dark purple. These are not bruises and typically fade within a few days. They are a normal and expected part of the process.

Does it hurt?

Most people find cupping relaxing. You may feel tightness or warmth where the cups are applied, but it is not generally painful.

Can it be used without acupuncture?

Yes — cupping can be a stand-alone treatment or integrated with other techniques such as acupuncture, motor point therapy, or Tui Na massage.
