Frequently Asked Questions

 What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice involving the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow and promote balance. It’s used to support various health concerns by encouraging the body’s natural healing processes.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people experience minimal discomfort during acupuncture. The needles are very thin, and sensations can range from a slight tingling to a feeling of relaxation. Any discomfort is typically brief.

What conditions can acupuncture support?

Acupuncture is commonly used to support:

  • Musculoskeletal issues like back pain and joint stiffness

  • Stress and anxiety management

  • Digestive concerns

  • Women’s health, including menstrual and menopausal symptoms

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Sleep disturbances

How should I prepare for my first visit?

Give yourself plenty of time, both before and after your treatment, so you are not rushed. It’s best to eat a light meal or snack, also avoiding caffeine within a few hours before your appointment — coming on an empty stomach can lead to lightheadedness.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas like arms, legs, and back. .

If you take medications, supplements, or have any health conditions, bring that information with you to help inform your treatment plan.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first appointment will begin with a detailed health consultation. We’ll discuss your medical history, current concerns, and overall health goals. This helps ensure your treatment is safe, appropriate, and tailored to your individual needs.

Before starting treatment, you’ll be asked to provide written consent, and we’ll explain what’s involved so you feel fully informed and comfortable.

Your session may include acupuncture and, if clinically appropriate, other supportive techniques such as cupping, moxibustion, electro-acupuncture, or motor point therapy — all based on your presentation and preferences.

The treatment itself typically lasts 55–70 minutes. Many clients find the experience deeply relaxing.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on individual health goals and conditions. Some people experience benefits after a few sessions, while others may require a longer course of treatment. Your practitioner will provide a personalised treatment plan.

Are the needles safe and sterile?

Yes, acupuncture needles are single-use, sterile, and disposed of after each treatment to ensure safety and hygiene.

Can I combine acupuncture with other treatments?

Acupuncture can often be integrated with other treatments. It’s important to inform your practitioner about any other therapies or medications you’re using to ensure a coordinated approach to your health care.

 Is acupuncture suitable for children?

Acupuncture can be adapted for children, using techniques appropriate for their age and comfort level.

Why do I have marks from cupping?

Cupping creates suction on the skin, which can draw circulation to the surface and often results in temporary marks. These may appear as red, purple, or pink circles, depending on individual skin response and the level of tension in the area.

The marks are not bruises and are typically painless. They usually fade within a few days.

Cupping is always performed with your comfort and consent in mind, and we’ll let you know what to expect based on your treatment plan.

Will I get a rebate from Medicare or Private Health?

Acupuncture is not covered by Medicare unless provided by a medical doctor.

However, many private health funds offer rebates for acupuncture as part of their extras cover. The amount you can claim depends on your individual policy and provider.

At AcuEnhanced, we offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming for eligible health funds.

Do I need a referral to see an acupuncturist?

No referral is necessary to consult with an acupuncturist.

What should I do after a session?

After acupuncture, it’s recommended to avoid caffeine for a few hours, rest and stay hydrated. Some people feel relaxed or slightly tired, while others may feel energized. Listening to your body and allowing time for recovery is beneficial.
