🌿 What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion (commonly called “moxa”) is a therapeutic technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the burning of a herb called mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near the skin or on acupuncture points.

The warming effect of moxibustion helps to:

  • Stimulate circulation

  • Dispel cold or dampness

  • Relieve pain and muscle stiffness

  • Support digestive and immune function

  • Restore energy and vitality

It is often used as a standalone therapy or in combination with acupuncture for a range of conditions where warmth and movement are needed.

🔥 How Moxibustion Works

During a moxibustion session, a practitioner may hold a lit moxa stick close to specific points on the body, or put some on the end of an acupuncture needle to transmit heat deeper into the tissue.

The warming sensation is soothing and deeply relaxing. It may feel like a gentle radiant heat moving through the body. The treatment is safe, smokeless (if using smokeless moxa), and adjusted to your comfort at all times.

We may also use moxa cones, warming boxes, or stick-on moxa depending on the condition being supported.

What Can Moxibustion Help With?

Moxa is commonly used to support:

  • Muscle tension, stiffness, or cold-sensitive pain

  • Menstrual cramping or cycle irregularity

  • Digestive sluggishness or abdominal bloating

  • Fatigue, low energy or poor circulation

  • Cold hands and feet

  • Certain fertility and pregnancy-related concerns (such as breech presentation or labour preparation)*

  • Immune or respiratory support during seasonal change

All treatments are tailored with comfort, privacy, and consent in mind.

*Please note: treatments involving pregnancy or breech support are provided in accordance with AHPRA guidelines and always with informed consent and medical collaboration where appropriate.

What to Expect in a Session

  • We begin with a consultation to understand your health history and treatment goals

  • Moxa is applied to specific areas of the body using techniques suited to your needs

  • You’ll remain comfortably clothed, with warmth applied through towels or directly near the skin

  • A session may include acupuncture, cupping or bodywork alongside moxa therapy

  • Most people find it calming, grounding and gently energising

You may notice an immediate feeling of warmth and relaxation during the session, and improved circulation or comfort afterward.

Common Questions

Does moxibustion hurt or burn the skin?

No — the heat is gentle and carefully controlled. Moxa is held near the skin, not directly on it (unless using specific indirect methods), and the sensation is warming, not burning. Your comfort is always the priority.

Can I have moxibustion without acupuncture?

Yes — while often combined with acupuncture, moxa can be used on its own as a gentle, stand-alone therapy. This is ideal for children, sensitive clients, or those looking for non-needling options.

Can moxibustion be used for turning a breech baby or inducing labour?

Acupuncture and moxibustion (a gentle heat technique) have traditionally been used in Chinese medicine to support breech repositioning and preparation for labour.

While we do not claim to induce labour or turn a baby directly, treatments may support the body’s natural readiness and relaxation during these stages.

For breech presentations, moxa is often used around 32–35 weeks, while labour preparation acupuncture is typically offered from 36–40 weeks, with consent from your primary medical care.

We always work alongside your medical care, and your comfort, safety, and consent are our top priorities.

Will there be smoke or smell?

Traditional moxa has an earthy, herbal aroma similar to incense — some clients find it relaxing, but we always tailor the method to your preferences and sensitivities.

What does moxa feel like?

Most people describe it as deeply soothing — a steady, radiant warmth that penetrates into the muscles or abdomen. It’s especially appreciated in colder months or for conditions involving cold, stiffness or fatigue.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Moxibustion can be used in specific ways to support certain stages of pregnancy, such as breech presentation or labour preparation. We only offer this with your informed consent, and in collaboration with your midwife or healthcare provider where appropriate.
