50+ Skin Review

Lets look at what is happening to your skin and the structures underneath, and of course what you can do about it:

Stage 3: 50s & 60s Whats Happening?

Menopause….. sigh….. The production of collagen and elastin levels continue to fall at an alarming rate, as does the production of hyaluronic acid, but now to throw salt on the wound collagen production slows down too! Significant volume loss in the face, due to shrinking fat pads and bone loss.

  • Collagen is a protein present in all the body’s organs and tissues. It provides the matrix that sustains the  skin whilst providing integrity, firmness and elasticity.
  • Elastin is a protein that coil and recoils like a spring within the elastic fibers of connective tissue and accounts for the elasticity of the skin working together with collagen.
  • Hyaluronic acid plays a vital role in skin hydration, so it doesn’t become dry and dehydrated.

As a result the face shows:

  • Further development wrinkles appear on the forehead, glabellar (between the eyebrows) and around the eyes. deeper lines and wrinkles develop around the eyes at rest. The edge of brow droops, eyelid bags and possible under eye bags form, under eye area darkens.
  • The nasolabial folds in the face are more developed and extend, the nose appears to hang lower, deep marionette lines appear at the outer edge of the lips, lips thin, and the chin may fold up with loss of volume.
  • The cheeks sag as they lose volume with the pull of gravity on the entire face, causing the skin to hang.
  • Gravity and the pull of muscles cause drooping or sagging of the skin and deeper structures from areas of deeper attachment, The lower jaw begins to hang, which may change the shape of the face.
  • The skin appears thinner and more hallow.
  • Skin texture is denser and hardened; the skin feels thicker.
  • Ageing in the skin is accelerated and very visible.

Stage 4: 70+ Whats Happening?

Very deep prominent wrinkles are visible on the entire face.

  • Very deep nasolabial folds cause the cheek to sag around the edges of the chin, deep marionette lines cause the skin to droop around them.
  • The eye area has prominent signs of aging with very loose skin in the upper and lower eyelids.
  • The cheeks visibly sag, hanging down from the force of gravity over many years.
  • The signs of sun damage are noticeable as darkened spots on the entire skin of the face and body.
  • A collection of wrinkles criss-cross the skin in high movement areas like around the eyes and cheeks.

    What we can do:

    • Mature skin needs a little more love and nurturing.
    • Cosmetic acupuncture treatments for patients in Stage 3 and 4 (50 +) main focus on stimulation fibroblasts to increase production of collagen and elastin in your face, also aiming to increase blood circulation thereby increasing blood oxygenation to create more hydration in the cells resulting in the softening of lines and wrinkles.
    • More hydration leads to a smother texture of the skin and glowing complexion from your facial rejuvenation treatments.
    • Motor points are used in your facial acupuncture treatment to lift and tone the saggging and drooping structures.

    Recommendation Guide:

    • Start on a collagen peptide supplement 2 weeks before starting treatment.
    • Treatment course will vary depending on the state of your health and skin.
    • Anti-aging and specific targeted areas: 12 – 15 treatments, twice a week for 4-6 weeks, then once a week for 3-6 weeks.

    Maintenance Support

    • Every 4 – 6 weeks, this will depend on how you respond to your initial treatment block and your lifestyle after.

Please not that this is a guide and that individual results may vary from cosmetic acupuncture and facial acupuncture treatments.
